The Lawrence cemetery is just south of the old Liberty IV school. It is located on land that was part of the John Lawrence farm. As a boy I went with my grandfather, Willie Lawrence, to help maintain this cemetery. I have spent a lot of time here and look forward to visiting this place many more times.

The oldest stone that I know of in the cemetery is that of Hanah Smith (1767-1828). I don't know who she is. There are several unmarked graves and also some with big pieces of sandstone for markers. Many of the early graves were put there before gravestones were available and some of the stones were made by local people from some sort of masonry. These masonry stones have crumbled and are no longer readable.

My grandfather told me that some of the unmarked graves were slaves. I do not know whose slaves they would have been. The cemetery is located in a wooded area and borders what was the early Dinkins land.

Between 1828 and the next earliest date of 1859 there must have been several people buried here. It is possible that there are two times the number of graves as there are stones.

It is believed that Joshua Dinkins is also buried here. It is possible that John Lawrence and Betsy are buried here. If he and his family started the cemetery and it was located on his land, it would be unlikely that he would have been buried elsewhere.
